When My Brother Mocked My Uniform, One Admiral Ended His Myth-mdue

The pier at San Diego Naval Base smelled like salt water, diesel fuel, and coffee that had been sitting too long in a paper cup.

But none of those rooms ever tired me the way my family did.

In my family, Brandon was the hero.

He was my little brother, though everyone treated him like the first son ever to put on a uniform.

When he enlisted right out of high school, my father acted like our house had been chosen for a national monument.

Retired Army Sergeant Major Owens wore his old cap to Brandon’s sendoff.
