Sarah had told her not to go digging through old papers.

Michael had told her to drop it.

That was where the argument began.

By 8:47 p.m., the whole house had changed shape around it.

Emily was not yelling anymore.

That made Sarah more afraid than yelling would have.

Her daughter had cried until her eyes were swollen, then turned quiet in the way teenagers do when they stop asking adults to save them.

“I just wanted to say thank you before I leave,” Emily said.
