It was the buzzing.

Her scalp burned against the pillowcase.

The sheets smelled like lavender detergent and warm motor oil.

For one confused second, she thought Daniel had left his beard trimmer running on the nightstand.

Then something heavy pressed her forehead deeper into the pillow.

A strip of hair slid across her cheek.

Mariana opened her eyes and saw long black pieces of herself falling across the white sheets.

She screamed so hard her throat hurt.

The bedroom light snapped on.

Eleanor stood over her in a floral robe, one hand gripping Daniel’s electric clippers and the other planted near Mariana’s pillow like she had every right to be there.

The clippers were black with silver teeth.

Eleanor’s robe had tiny blue flowers around the cuffs.

The bedside clock said 1:41 a.m.

Her scalp was hot where the blade had dragged too close.

“What did you do?” Mariana shouted, both hands flying to her head. “Are you insane?”

Eleanor did not flinch.

She looked at Mariana the way someone looks at a stain they have finally decided to scrub out.

“Don’t raise your voice at me, little girl,” she said. “Decent wives don’t come home late after drinking with men.”
