My dad introduced me as the family loser at his barbecue.

Then his Navy SEAL friend dropped his beer bottle and called me Razor Six.

The whole backyard went quiet with a paper plate bending in my hand and potato salad sliding toward my thumb.

It was one of those hot American afternoons where the air smelled like charcoal, sunscreen, cut grass, and somebody’s too-sweet baked beans.

My father’s smoker sat at the edge of the patio like a trophy.

A little American flag clipped to the porch railing snapped in the breeze.

My mother had set out red plastic cups, paper plates, folding chairs, and enough polite food to pretend our family knew how to be gentle with one another.

My father ruined that illusion in under ten seconds.

“This is my oldest, Emily,” he said, clapping a heavy hand on my shoulder hard enough to make my plastic fork jump.

I smelled beer on his breath and hickory smoke in his shirt.

He grinned at the neighbors like I was part of the entertainment.

“Don’t worry about remembering her job. Nobody else can either. We just call her the family loser.”

A few people chuckled because people will laugh at cruelty when the host owns the grill.

My sister Ashley smiled into her sweet tea.

My mother looked down at the grass.

I stood there with barbecue sauce sliding off the edge of my plate and told my face not to move.

I had practiced that for years.

Then a bottle shattered across the brick patio.

The sound was sharp and clean.

It cut through the hiss of burgers, the cooler lid thumping shut, and my cousin Madison asking somebody where the extra napkins were.

Across the patio, Tom Whitaker stared at me like he had seen a dead woman stand up in broad daylight.

Tom was the guest my father had been bragging about all morning.
