I carried my daughter out of my parents’ house like I was lifting something sacred from a fire.

I looked at her because some part of me still expected the sentence to correct itself.

I expected her face to break.

I expected her to see Maisie’s head against my shoulder and turn into the mother I had spent my whole life trying to earn.
