When Her Colonel Mother Reached the ER, the Carter Family Froze-ruby

She almost let the call go to voicemail because only two people used that number after midnight.

One was her duty office.

The other was her daughter.

“Mom…”

Sarah stopped walking.

Emily’s voice was so thin it seemed to come from far away, even though the phone was pressed against Sarah’s ear.

“Come get me… Michael’s family hurt me.”

Someone laughed in a room down the corridor, unaware that one mother’s life had split into before and after.

Sarah did not ask for permission.

She did not explain.

She put down the coffee, grabbed the keys to her SUV, and walked through the night with her phone still in her fist.
