The patio lights were already on even though the sun had not fully gone down.

They crossed my parents’ backyard in a crooked glowing line, fastened to the fence posts with little black clips I had ordered late one night when Dad said the yard looked embarrassing.

It was my father’s sixtieth birthday, and I had driven two hours from Boston in a blue summer dress my mother once approved of because, in her words, it made me look “less tired.”

I had stopped for gas, bought a card, and told myself that no matter what happened, I was not going to let the old patterns pull me under.
