The first night in the Malibu house was supposed to be the first quiet night of my new life.

I wanted to wake up and hear waves instead of Marcus’s excuses.

I wanted to drink coffee without checking emails.

I wanted a desk facing the water where no one could ask me to make myself smaller for the comfort of people who had never paid the cost of my strength.

The house was not meant to impress anyone.

It was meant to be quiet.

The deed was clean.

The LLC paperwork was clear.

The money trail was mine, and the recorded ownership summary said so in language dry enough to put most people to sleep.

At 4:18 p.m. on closing day, my attorney emailed the final recorded deed, the LLC operating agreement, the guest authorization policy, and the occupancy restrictions.

I saved all of it.

I did not save it because I expected war.

I saved it because peace without boundaries is just surrender with better lighting.

That first night, the house smelled like cardboard, clean paint, salt air, and the faint lemon cleaner the previous owners must have used before handing over the keys.
