The morning Carter Reeves was supposed to teach America how safe a family could be, two children walked into the lobby of his building without one.

They were small enough that the revolving doors seemed to swallow them first.

Security scanners hummed on both sides of the entrance.

Thirty-four floors above them, Carter Reeves stood in front of a wall of cameras and adjusted the cuff of a charcoal suit that had been tailored to hide nearly everything.

It hid the faint stiffness in his left shoulder.

It hid the small ridge near his cheekbone where surgeons had put his face back together.

It even hid the fact that the man about to sell peace of mind to millions of parents had never been able to make peace with the one thing he believed he would never have.

A child.

The countdown clock behind him showed five minutes to live broadcast.

His communications director, Lydia, stood near the stage with a launch binder tucked under one arm and a paper coffee cup in the other.

“You’re clean on the opening,” she said.

Carter nodded.

“Start with the school bus tracking,” she added. “Then the backyard alerts. Make it personal before you make it technical.”

That had always been the trick.

Make fear sound manageable.

Make panic look like a notification.

Make the unknown small enough to fit on a phone screen.

Carter had built Reeves Guardian around the everyday terror of raising children in a country where parents were expected to be everywhere at once.

Was the school bus late.
