Twin Girls Reached A Police Station With A Secret In One Belly-mdue

Rain came down so hard that night it turned the police station windows into shaking glass.

The county station sat beside a small parking lot, a flagpole out front, and a mailbox near the curb where people dropped municipal forms during business hours.

It looked tired.

The lobby smelled like old coffee, wet concrete, copier paper, and the faint metallic scent that always drifted from the holding area after the floor had been mopped.

Officer Daniel had been at the front desk because the night clerk was finishing a report and the rest of the building had gone quiet in that strange way public places do after dark.

The phones had stopped ringing.

The radio only cracked once every few minutes.

The coffee in Daniel’s paper cup had gone cold, but he kept holding it because his hands needed something to do.

Then the front door flew open.

Wind pushed rain across the tile.

The small American flag on the wall by the desk fluttered once from the draft.

Daniel looked up and saw a child.

She was tiny, soaked through, and trying not to shake.

Her hair clung to her face in dark strands.

Her lips had turned a bluish shade that made him stand before his mind had fully caught up.

Both of her hands were wrapped around the handle of an old shopping cart.

It was the kind of cart someone had dragged from behind a grocery store and kept using long after one wheel went bad.

It rattled when she pushed it forward.

That was when Daniel saw the second child inside.

For one second, his brain tried to make the scene ordinary.

A tired sister.

A child asleep.

A bad storm.
