The sound of my front door breaking open was not like the movies.

It was sharper.

My coffee mug dropped from my hand and shattered across the hardwood.

Rex moved before I did.

Seventy pounds of retired military Belgian Malinois hit the edge of the living room rug with a snarl that made the windows seem to tighten in their frames.

His harness shifted across his shoulders.

His ears went forward.

His body placed itself exactly where it always did when my breathing changed too fast or a room turned wrong.

Between me and the threat.

Only this time, the threat had my mother’s perfume, my father’s polished shoes, and my brother Michael’s red face coming through the broken doorway.

“Grab the dog, Michael!” my mother screamed.

I stepped into the hallway so fast I barely felt the broken mug under my sock.

Michael came in with a heavy leather slip lead looped around one hand.

He looked less like a brother than a man who had been given a job and did not care what he had to damage to finish it.

“Do not touch him,” I said.

He ignored me.

He lunged toward Rex’s neck.

My body reacted before the rest of me had time to be hurt by it.

I drove the heel of my palm into Michael’s chest and shoved.

His shoulders slammed into the drywall hard enough to knock a framed photo crooked.

The leash hit the floor.

Rex stayed pressed against my leg, silent now, his whole body vibrating with restraint.
