By the time the moving truck pulled into Brooke’s driveway, her family thought the hard part was already over.

They thought she had done what she always did.

They thought she had swallowed the insult, folded herself small, and made room for everybody else.

The daughter who learned to say, “It’s fine,” before anyone even asked whether it was.

But that morning, with a truck hissing by the mailbox and Alyssa holding a new set of keys like a crown, Brooke was not confused.

She was waiting.

One week earlier, her mother had stood in the dining room and told her, “This house isn’t yours anymore, Brooke. You have until Friday to leave.”

Denise said it softly, almost pleasantly, as if she were reminding her daughter to bring a side dish to brunch.

The room had smelled like lemon cleaner because Denise had wiped down the table herself.

That was the part Brooke remembered later.

Not the sentence first.

The smell.

Sharp, fake-clean, citrus over hardwood, like her mother wanted every surface shining before she took it.

Leonard stood beside Denise with his hands in his pockets.

He did not look at Brooke.

Her father had always been good at not looking at things that made him smaller.

Alyssa leaned in the doorway with her arms crossed, smiling like someone had finally fixed a problem she had been forced to tolerate.

Brooke set her mug down carefully.

Her coffee had already gone lukewarm.

The morning sun hit the floor in pale strips, and for a second she watched dust move through the light because looking at that was easier than looking at three people who had decided her life could be rearranged without her permission.
