“Why don’t you just disappear already?” Camille screamed across the dining room, her voice sharp enough to cut through the rain ticking against the windows.

A roast nobody had touched.

A bracelet shaking on my sister’s wrist while she cried tears that looked perfect because she had practiced them her whole life.

My mother stood near the sideboard with her mouth pressed into a line.

My father watched me like he had already decided I was guilty before anyone asked what happened.

Then his hand came up.

The slap cracked across my cheek so fast the room blurred.

For one second, the light split into rings.

The taste of blood pooled under my tongue, sharp and metallic, and I heard somebody inhale like they wanted to stop him but not badly enough to move.

Nobody asked how I could have sent anything when I had spent the entire evening in that dining room listening to my mother describe floral arrangements like Camille’s engagement party had not just collapsed in front of everyone.

“She told Martin’s family about the debts,” Camille said.

Her eyes flicked to me between sobs.
