The first person to look away was not the one who shoved me.

It was the girl by the door.

At home near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, my father, Master Sergeant Michael Parker, had turned our backyard into a rough obstacle course with rope, tires, wooden beams, and whatever else he could make safe enough to train on.

He never yelled just to hear himself yell.

He watched.

If I rushed, he noticed.

If I got angry, he noticed faster.

“Everyone gets tired,” he would say while I crawled under a low net with dirt in my mouth. “Not everyone stays smart when they’re tired.”

My mother, Lieutenant Colonel Rebecca Parker, taught the other part.

Her lessons happened at the kitchen table, usually late at night, under the pale buzz of the old lamp that made every textbook page look a little yellow.

She believed discipline was not only what a body could do.
