The Woman At His Gate Carried The Secret His Father Buried For Years-nhu9999

The rain had already swallowed the driveway when Jonathan Ashford heard the buzzer at the front gate.

“There is a woman outside, sir,” she said.

Jonathan looked up.

“In this weather?”

“With a child.”

That was enough to make him stand.

The estate cameras were clear even through rain, and the screen near the foyer showed a pale shape kneeling by the gate.

For one second she looked sixteen again, standing under a summer oak with her hair in a ribbon and a laugh she tried to hide when his father walked past.

Then the woman in front of him came back.

Tired.

Ashamed.

Soaked to the bone.

“Jonathan,” she whispered.

She tried to rise, but her legs failed her.

“I did not know this was yours. I am sorry. We will leave.”

“No,” he said.

It came out sharper than he meant.

He opened the gate himself and pulled off his coat.
