For years, Jake Anderson’s family had learned to say the word failure as if it were his middle name.

They did not always use it out loud.

Letting people assume what they needed to assume because explaining the truth would only create problems none of them were cleared, prepared, or trustworthy enough to handle.

His mother noticed his shirt first.

It was plain, dark, nothing expensive.
