The Sister They Erased Walked Into the Wedding and Broke the Room-olweny

My family called me an ugly high school grad and erased me from their lives before the cake at my graduation party was even cut.

My name was Hannah Whitaker.

That afternoon, I had just become the first person in my family to graduate high school with a full college scholarship waiting for me.

Cousins laughed.

Aunts laughed.

Neighbors laughed.

People who had come to eat food bought for my graduation party stood under string lights and let my face burn while the cake sat untouched on the folding table.

One aunt looked down at the frosting roses as if the cake had suddenly become fascinating.

A neighbor adjusted his sunglasses.

My father tapped ash from his cigarette into an empty soda can.
