The first thing Erin Callahan noticed in the auditorium was not the stage.

It was the program.

For one second, before her father opened the door, Erin had let herself remember being nineteen and furious and young enough to believe that leaving was the same thing as being missed.

Then her father looked her up and down and said, “You’re still alive.”

There was no relief behind it.

There was not even anger strong enough to respect.

It sounded like an inventory note.

Inside the house, lemon polish rode over the smell of baked ham.

The mantel looked like a museum built by people who had decided exactly which version of the family deserved glass and lighting.
