The Package in the Rain That Exposed a Seven-Year Family Lie-nhu9999

The first time Sophie saw Julian Cross, she asked him if he could help a rocket find its way around the moon.

She did not know he was her father.

She only knew she was wet, scared, and trying very hard to remember what I had taught her.

If we ever got separated, find a place with people.

Stay still.

Keep your backpack on.

Wait for me.

That was what she did inside the restaurant on the Upper East Side, standing in her red rain boots with her purple backpack hugged to her chest while rainwater dripped from her jacket onto a floor polished so clean it reflected the lights.

Julian’s mouth moved like he almost smiled but had forgotten the habit.

That time he did smile.

“Your mom sounds smart.”

“She is. She knows subway maps and how to make pancakes with no eggs.”

He nodded toward the chair across from him.

“You can sit there until she comes back.”

Sophie climbed up and placed her backpack on her lap.
