The door did not just close on me that night.

It made a sound like the house itself had chosen a side.

The deadbolt clicked, clean and final, and I stood on the porch in a cotton blouse thin enough for June even though the rain was cold enough to sting my skin.

My suitcase was small because Adrian had made sure I had no time to pack anything real.

Two wool sweaters.

A cracked family photo.

A folder from the fertility clinic that I had shoved between them without thinking, because after three years of appointments and injections and surgical schedules, paperwork had become something my hands grabbed automatically.

Inside, the house glowed yellow through the front windows.

I could see the kitchen pendant lights, the couch we had picked out on a Labor Day sale, and the shape of a woman curled under a blanket in my emerald silk honeymoon robe.

That robe had been the first expensive thing I bought for myself after our wedding.

Adrian had laughed when I packed it for our honeymoon and said it made me look like somebody who believed in happy endings.

His mother stood behind the glass panel now, holding one curtain back with two fingers.

“She’s barren,” she said.

She did not whisper it.

She said it like she wanted the porch camera to remember.

“She’ll never give you a legacy.”

Adrian did not correct her.

That was the part that scraped deepest.

Not the mistress.

Not the robe.

Not even the fact that he had changed the lock while I was at the pharmacy picking up the last prescription he claimed we could not afford.

It was the stillness in his face while his mother said the thing she had spent three years teaching me to believe.

I wanted to scream until the neighbors came out.

I wanted to beat my fists against the door until my knuckles split.
