The second time was at the gas station, when two men near the ice freezer lowered their voices just enough to let me know they wanted me to hear.

“She couldn’t handle it,” one of them said.

The other sighed like my life had disappointed him personally.

“Shame,” he muttered. “Her father must be crushed.”

I paid for my bottle of water, walked back to my rental car, and sat behind the wheel with both hands still on the steering wheel.
