My name is Madison Parker, and this started at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

The first thing I remember from Induction Day was the heat rising off the pavement.

It came up through the soles of my shoes and settled under my collar like a warning.

The air smelled like fresh grass, bus exhaust, sunscreen, and new uniforms still too stiff to belong to anyone.

Parents stood along the edges with phones raised and mouths trembling.

Some were proud.

Some were trying not to cry.

Most of the new midshipmen acted louder than they felt.

They joked too hard.

They smiled too wide.

They looked around as if confidence could be borrowed from whoever stood closest.

I did the opposite.

I stayed quiet.

My dark hair was twisted into a regulation bun tight enough to pull at my scalp.

My uniform collar rubbed against my neck.

My hands hung loose at my sides even though everything in me was counting, measuring, learning.

That is how my father raised me.

Master Sergeant Michael Parker did not believe in wasted movement.
