The bank alert came at 9:17 on a Thursday morning, while Sarah Mitchell sat on the twenty-second floor of a downtown office tower pretending the most important thing in her life was the contract in front of her.

The conference room smelled like burnt espresso, printer toner, and rain trapped in wool coats.

Outside the glass wall, the city looked washed in dull gray light.

Sarah’s phone buzzed once beside her coffee cup.

She looked down because that was what people did with phones.

Then the room seemed to pull away from her.

For one second, she heard only the soft click of someone’s pen.

Then the hum of the air conditioning.
