The folding cot pinched Sofia Herrera’s shoulder every time she breathed.

Dust clung to the back of her throat.

Above her, the sheet-metal roof over the garage held the May heat like a pan forgotten on the stove.

The fan in the corner clicked with every slow turn, pushing around air that never really cooled anything.

Downstairs, her family laughed around the good plates.
