Ethan Calloway arrived at Saint Agnes Children’s Home in Dallas just after noon with a donation check, a prepared smile, and the kind of patience wealthy men use when cameras are pointed at them.

Charity lunches.

Anything that let people believe he was still whole.

Eight years earlier, Ethan had been a husband with paint samples in his kitchen drawer and a crib invoice folded into his wallet.

Claire, his wife, had teased him because he kept calling the baby “she” before any doctor confirmed it.

She had already chosen the name Sophie on a beach in Florida, standing barefoot in the tide with salt in her hair and her hand curved over her belly.

“She’ll need a soft name,” Claire had said.

Then she looked at him more seriously.

“And a strong one.”

Two months later, a hospital called after a highway accident and told Ethan both of them were gone.

Claire was gone.

The baby was gone.

The funeral director said the coffin had to remain closed.
