The casserole was the first thing Caroline Voss noticed when the room went quiet.

It sat on Diane Hartwell’s marble island under a sheet of foil, still warm enough to fog the glass at the edges.

Caroline had made it the way Marcus used to like it, with brown sugar folded into the sweet potatoes and pecans arranged carefully over the top.

A reason to call her difficult.

The Hartwell house in Scottsdale looked perfect that evening.

White counters, silver serving trays, crystal glasses, expensive candles, and not one thing out of place except the wife who had not yet been removed from the family picture.

Diane moved around the kitchen with the crisp control of a woman who believed every room belonged to her if she stood in it long enough.

She had not invited Caroline for kindness.

Caroline understood that before Diane opened her mouth.

Marcus had been nervous all afternoon.

He had changed shirts twice, checked his watch too often, and avoided looking directly at Caroline’s left hand.

He had stopped noticing it months earlier, but other people still saw it.

“Marcus’s new girlfriend will be here soon,” she said. “She’s successful. Influential. Don’t make things uncomfortable.”

Caroline was holding the casserole with both hands.

For a moment, all she felt was the heat of the dish through the quilted pot holders.
