The first thing Brenda Parker-Hale did when she crossed onto my ranch was spit on my father’s grave marker.

She did not do it by accident.

The second thing she did was smile at the deputy beside her.

‘Take his keys before he remembers he’s nobody,’ she said.

The third thing she did was reach toward my ranch gate like she already owned the land, the cattle, the barn, the house, and the silence I had spent three years building around myself.

That silence had taken work.

People think quiet is what happens when nothing is left.

They are wrong.

Quiet is something you build plank by plank after the shouting stops.

Mine started after my wife died.

It deepened after the Bureau called my final case closed but would not say it out loud in the ways that mattered.
