My father looked at my promotion invitation like I had handed him junk mail.

He did not sit up.

He did not lower the volume.

He stayed sunk into the recliner in my parents’ split-level house in Akron, with ESPN highlights flashing across his glasses and pretzel salt stuck to the front of his sweatshirt.

The kitchen smelled like tomato sauce, garlic, and the old family habit of pretending nothing hurt if no one said it out loud.

“We’re not wasting our time on your pathetic little promotion ceremony,” he said.

My mother stood at the stove with her reading glasses pushed up into her hair.

For half a second, the spoon stopped moving.

Then she stirred sauce that did not need stirring.

“Aaron, honey, don’t start,” she said.

I turned to her.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“Exactly,” my father said, pointing the remote at me. “You get that military face and suddenly everybody’s supposed to clap.”

The invitation lay on the coffee table between a Bass Pro Shops catalog and one of Danny’s unpaid invoices from a boat mechanic.

Eighteen years in uniform.

It should have felt like proof.

In my father’s house, it felt like another item waiting to be mocked.

I picked up the invitation before he could set his beer on it.

“It’s at Fort Meade,” I said. “Not Mars.”

Dad snorted.

“And what exactly happens there? Somebody pins a leaf on you and we all pretend you stormed Normandy?”

My younger brother Danny laughed from the kitchen island.
