The first thing Mariana remembered later was the color of the balloons.

Purple.

Not expensive purple, not matching-party-supply purple, just the little pack Sofía had picked out at the grocery store because she said they looked happy.

They were taped along the living room wall, bumping softly whenever the air conditioner pushed through the vent.

The cake was chocolate because Sofía hated vanilla unless it came as ice cream.

The table was a folding table dragged from the garage and covered with a plastic cloth that kept sliding at the corners.

There were paper plates, plastic forks, soda cups, two cousins arguing over the last slice of pepperoni pizza, and Mariana’s mother trying to keep frosting off the couch.

It was ordinary in the way the best birthdays often are.

No rented room.

No glossy decorations.

No perfect photo wall.

Just a child laughing barefoot in her own home, surrounded by people who had actually been there for her.

That was why the doorbell felt so harmless at first.
