The belt came out of Harrison Matthews’s pants at 6:12 on a Tuesday evening.

It made a slow leather hiss, the kind of sound that turns a room cold before anything even happens.

A bright red “100” sat at the top of the page, cheerful and cruel, like it had wandered into the wrong life.

I had carried it home carefully because some small part of me still believed good news might matter.

Some small part of me thought my mother might smile.

Instead, Harrison blocked my bedroom door with his white dress shirt wrinkled from work, his tie pulled loose, his face red with the anger he always called discipline.

Behind him, my mother stood in the hall holding a dish towel.
