The Envelope Catherine Left at Dinner Made Bennett’s Lie Collapse-Quieen

By the time the garlic shrimp reached the far end of the private dining room, Catherine had already decided she would not argue with anyone at Walter’s birthday dinner.

It was not about Margaret.

It was not even about the way Bennett had walked into the restaurant acting like the whole party had risen out of his own generosity.

It was Walter’s 68th birthday.

There were forty relatives packed into the private room of an elegant seafood restaurant in Charleston, and Catherine had spent too many weeks making the arrangements to let one cruel comment ruin the evening before the cake.

Then her daughters saw the shrimp.

Sophie was five, still small enough that her feet swung under the chair when she tried to sit properly.

Hazel was eight and already careful in rooms where adults were unpredictable.

The room smelled of lemon, melted butter, parsley, and chilled seafood trays sweating over ice.

Silverware clicked against plates.

Wineglasses lifted and lowered.

Bennett moved through it all as if he were the reason the candles were lit.

He wore a new button-down shirt and kept flashing the gold watch he had bought himself two months earlier after telling Catherine they had to be careful with school expenses.

Every few minutes, he said some version of the same thing.

His father deserved the best.

He was taking care of everything.

The family heard him and smiled.

Catherine heard him and kept her eyes on the tablecloth.
