The first thing Officer Barrett Hughes said to me was not “Good evening.”

It was not “Can I ask you a few questions?”

It was, “Get away from that house.”

I was standing on my own front porch with a stack of mail in my hand.

The air had that damp, late-evening feel that makes paper curl at the edges.

The porch light buzzed faintly above me.

Across the street, a sprinkler clicked once, spat a thin arc of water, and stopped.

Then the cruiser lights painted my white porch columns red, blue, red again.

For half a second, I thought the officer must have been speaking to someone behind me.

He did not soften.

He did not ask for identification.

He looked over my shoulder at the house, then back at me, as if he trusted the columns more than he trusted the man standing between them.

I had lived in that house for eighteen years.

I had signed the deed transfer myself.

I had argued with the county clerk over a boundary map in 2017 because the survey line near the oak tree was wrong by several feet.

I had written property tax checks from the same kitchen table where my grandchildren used to color dinosaurs with broken crayons.

My wife, Lorraine, had planted the little oak sapling near the driveway before the cancer made her too tired to kneel in the dirt.
