My mother, Amelia Hale, had cooked enough food for twice as many people because she had a habit of making room before anyone asked for it.

The house smelled like browned butter, cinnamon tea, and oak smoke.

Inside, my little sister Tessa was trying to keep cranberry sauce off her drawing paper while she sketched a police car with wings.

When Detective Mercer knocked, my mother opened the door before he could finish apologizing for interrupting dinner.

“Come in,” she said. “There’s too much food anyway.”

My father, Victor Hale, stood from the table and shook his hand.

“Julian helped with that zoning mess last spring,” Dad told me.

He said it the way a man says a name he has already decided to trust.

Mercer smiled like he was embarrassed to be praised.

He set his coat over a chair.

He said the house was beautiful.

He said the gate must be a headache in bad weather.

He said he could not imagine keeping up with all the cameras.

I was seventeen, and at seventeen you notice more than adults think you do.

I noticed his eyes pause on the security panel beside the pantry door.

I noticed how his questions sounded casual but landed in exact places.

I noticed my father answer him because my father believed honest men did not hide simple things.

Tessa tugged Mercer’s sleeve and asked whether detectives arrested people on Thanksgiving.

“Only if they steal dessert,” he said.

She laughed so hard she dropped her green crayon.
