The moving truck arrived at exactly 9:00 on Saturday morning.

I remember the time because I had been staring at the clock since 6:12.

The house was too quiet before it came.

The refrigerator hummed.

The kitchen faucet ticked once every few minutes because I had been meaning to call someone about it.

My coffee sat untouched on the counter, gone cold in the same mug my husband used to tease me for using every morning.

Outside, May sunlight sat bright on the porch rail, the kind of light that makes ordinary things look cleaner than they are.

I had new keys in my purse, a beige folder against my chest, and a feeling in my stomach I had not felt since the day I signed my husband’s last hospital form.

Not fear.

Finality.

The truck came slowly up the street, coughing diesel into the warm air.

The sound rolled past the mailbox, past the little American flag I had put on the porch years ago, and stopped right in front of my driveway like it belonged there.

For one second, I almost felt sorry for everyone inside it.

Then Michael stepped out.

My son looked relaxed, like a man arriving to a place where the door was already open.

He had always looked that way at my house.

That was my fault, at least in part.

I had given him a key when he married Sarah because I wanted him to know he still had a home.

I had let him come in without knocking when the children were babies because he was tired and she was tired and everybody needed help.

I had watched the kids during school breaks, cooked casseroles when money was tight, and given him cash from an envelope I kept in the flour canister because he said rent was late only this once.

Only this once became twice.

Twice became normal.

Normal became expectation.

A mother can mistake being needed for being loved if she is not careful.
