The invitation came in a cream envelope that looked expensive before I even opened it.

The paper was thick beneath my thumb, the kind people choose when they want a moment to feel important.

His name sat in the center of the card in elegant black lettering.

Everything about it was tasteful.

Everything about it was controlled.

Then I saw the line he had written by hand.

Successful children and their families only.

I read it once.

Then I read it again, not because I misunderstood it, but because a person sometimes needs a second look at cruelty when it arrives politely.

My phone rang before I had even placed the invitation on the counter.

“Did you get the invitation?” he asked.

“I did.”

“Good,” he said. “Then you understand why we had to be selective.”

That was my father at his most natural.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not insult people in ways that could be quoted back to him.

He preferred soft words with sharp edges, the kind that left no visible mark but still told you exactly where you stood.
