For most of my life, I lived inside my family like a closed door nobody bothered to open.

Our house sat on a quiet street with a cracked driveway, a mailbox that leaned slightly left, and a small American flag my mother used to replace every summer before the color faded.

It looked ordinary from the sidewalk.

Inside, it had rules.

Jake could be loud.

Dad could be louder.

Jake would throw his gear bag by the laundry room door, slam the fridge open, and talk as if every story needed an audience.

Dad ate it up.

Jake was built like the son my father would have ordered if someone had handed him a form.
