The Courtroom Question That Made My Sister’s Smile Disappear-mdue

My sister walked into court that morning as if the house was already hers.

Not almost hers.

Not maybe hers.

Hers.

She had that soft smile on her face, the one she used when she wanted people to think she was fragile instead of calculating.

My parents sat behind her on the wooden courtroom bench, proud and still, dressed like they were attending a ceremony instead of a hearing over forged paperwork.

My mother held her handbag with both hands.

My father kept his chin raised.

Neither of them looked at me like a daughter.

They looked at me like an inconvenience that was finally about to be corrected.

The county courthouse smelled like old paper, burnt coffee, and floor cleaner.

Every time someone opened the door, cool hallway air slid across the back of my neck and made me more aware of how stiffly I was sitting.

I had not slept much the night before.

I had gone over the documents again and again until the numbers blurred, not because I doubted the truth, but because I knew my family had spent years teaching me that truth did not matter if Isabella cried hard enough.

Then she smiled a little wider.

‘Maybe then you’ll finally realize you’re not the one in charge of this family.’

I looked straight ahead.

There were plenty of things I could have said back.

I could have reminded her that she had not paid one mortgage payment, one repair bill, one property tax bill, or one sleepless night into that home.

I could have told her that envy does not become justice just because you bring your parents to court.

I could have asked her how many times she had practiced my signature before she decided it was good enough to gamble with.
