The call came at 2:46 in the morning.

Colonel Sarah Mitchell had just stepped out of a late briefing on base, still holding a paper coffee cup that had gone cold in her hand.

The parking lot lights buzzed above her.

Rain had started to gather on the asphalt, turning the black pavement silver under the lamps.

She was tired in the way people get tired after years of holding rooms together without letting anyone see the cost.

Then her phone rang.

It was Emily.

Sarah almost smiled when she saw her daughter’s name, because even at twenty-nine, Emily still called her mother for small things.

A stuck cabinet hinge.

A question about health insurance paperwork.

A picture of a house plan she was proud of.

But when Sarah answered, there was no ordinary daughter on the other end.

There was only a whisper.

“Mom… come get me… David’s family hit me.”

Sarah stopped beside her SUV.

For one second, her whole body went still.

The base behind her seemed to fall away.

The rain on her windshield became louder than the voices of the officers walking out behind her.

“Emily,” she said. “Where are you?”

“The ER,” Emily whispered. “County hospital. Don’t tell them you’re coming. Please.”

There was a sound then, something like fabric dragging against plastic.

Then the line went dead.

Sarah did not scream.
