The dining room smelled like turkey, brown sugar carrots, lemon furniture polish, and the kind of family tension nobody admits they brought with them.

Ray laughed with his whole chest, the way he always did when he wanted everyone to know the room belonged to him.

“Come on, sweetheart,” he said, wiping his chin with the back of his hand. “Say your silly little code name again.”
