At 5:17 on Christmas morning, Sarah Whitman’s phone rang in a kitchen that still smelled like punch, cinnamon, and pie crust.

The little white lights around her kitchen window were still on because she had forgotten to unplug them before bed.

The coffee maker was already sighing on the counter, and somewhere in the living room, the old wall clock ticked with the stubborn confidence of a house that believed the worst part of the holiday was over.

Sarah answered without looking at the screen.

She thought it might be Emily calling to say she and Michael were stopping by later, or maybe to ask whether there was any pie left.

Instead, she heard Michael’s voice.

“Come get your daughter at the downtown bus terminal,” he said.

His voice had no panic in it.

No shame.

No urgency.

It was the voice of a man calling about something he had set outside for pickup.

“Because another woman is taking her place in my house.”

Sarah sat up so fast the blanket fell off her lap.

For a second, she could not make the words fit together.

“What did you just say?” Sarah asked.

Michael sighed.

That sigh would stay with her long after the bruises faded.

It was not the sigh of a frightened husband.

It was the sigh of someone being inconvenienced.

“Don’t start drama, Sarah,” he said. “Emily got hysterical last night. I have important guests coming for dinner today, and I’m not letting her ruin my reputation.”
