Christmas morning at Fort Liberty looked too clean for what had happened.

The streets were empty enough that my headlights felt rude moving through them.

The young MP on the line tried to keep his voice professional.

“Yes.”

“Sir, there is a civilian here asking for you. Says he is your son.”

“My son has gate access.”

The silence that followed was not long, but it was heavy.

“Sir,” he said, “you need to come down here.”

I drove faster than I should have.

I did not turn on my siren.
