The first thing Grace Miller noticed when she pulled into the driveway was not the dark house.

It was the missing porch light.

Mark always left that light on when he wanted neighbors to see the place looking normal.

He liked the flag clipped neatly to the porch rail, the plastic wreath centered on the door, the Christmas decorations that made the house look warm from the street.

But at 8:42 p.m. on Christmas Eve, the house looked hollow.

The driveway was empty.

The lawn was still.

One upstairs window gave off a faint blue glow from a nightlight, and that tiny square of color was enough to make Grace get out of her truck before she had even turned the engine all the way off.

Her bakery keys were still in her coat pocket.

Her hands smelled like cinnamon and sugar.

Her pulse was hammering so hard that the cold seemed to move right through her.

“Lily,” she called at the front door.

She kept her voice steady because children listen harder to tone than to words.

“It’s Aunt Grace. Open up, sweetheart.”

For a moment nothing happened.

Then a deadbolt clicked.

The sound was small, but to Grace it felt like the whole world had been holding its breath.

The door opened a few inches, then wider, and Lily stood there barefoot in unicorn pajamas with her stuffed rabbit hanging from one hand.

She was nine years old.

Her cheeks were blotched from crying.

Her lips were pale.

Her eyes had that glassy, overcareful look Grace had seen too many times in children who were trying to decide whether needing help would get them punished.

Grace stepped inside and pulled her close.
