“You should come to Christmas dinner so you can finally accept that you ended up alone, Emily.”

Michael said it like he was offering peace.

He was not.

Emily knew that voice.

It was the same smooth, careful voice he used eight years earlier when he packed a duffel bag, kissed the top of her head like a man leaving for work, and never came back.

Back then, she had been standing in a tiny kitchen with one hand on her stomach and the other gripping the edge of the sink.

She had not yet known there were four heartbeats inside her.

A hospital discharge packet thick enough to make the attorney sigh when she first saw it.
