The beans were already simmering when Thomas pulled into the driveway.

Emily told herself it was fine.

She had been telling herself that for a year.

Then Thomas knocked once and opened the front door with the confidence of a son who still believed this house would always receive him.

Emily smiled before she meant to.

He came in wearing a dark wool coat, polished shoes, and the faint smell of cologne and paper coffee.

Behind him, his two boys rushed inside and wrapped themselves around her waist.

For those few seconds, she let herself be a grandmother before she remembered the heat bill folded under the sugar tin and the pharmacy receipt tucked into the drawer.
