The three of us were seated near the back of Azure Heights Estate, close enough to hear the string quartet but far enough from the head table to understand the message.

Dad sat beside her in the same dark suit he wore to funerals, graduations, and any formal event where he hoped nobody would notice the age of the cuffs.

He had polished his shoes that morning at the kitchen table while Mom stood in the hallway asking whether her dress looked too plain.
