“IT WAS JUST A SMALL PUSH,” my parents said later, as if putting the word small in front of it could shrink what happened to me.

Small was the word Lisa used in the car.

Small was the word my father repeated when he could not look me in the eye.

Small was the word Vanessa hid behind for months, until a neurologist turned a monitor toward all of us and made the truth impossible to decorate.

The night it happened, the emergency room lights buzzed like they were mad about being awake after midnight.

Everything smelled like disinfectant, old coffee, and the copper tang of blood drying somewhere near my hairline.

The paper sheet under my legs crackled every time I shifted, and the sound made my stomach twist because even tiny noises felt too sharp.

I was sixteen years old, sitting on the edge of a hospital bed in a thin gown, trying to hold my head still while the room kept arriving late.

Dr. Mitchell stood in front of me and lifted two fingers.

“Follow this for me, Olivia.”

My eyes would not obey.

They slid to the side, like the rest of me had been knocked loose and nobody had put me back together correctly.

“Can you tell me what happened?” he asked.

My mouth opened.

My father answered first.

“She fell down the basement stairs,” he said.

He said it so fast that even through the ringing in my head, I knew it had been rehearsed.

“She was getting decorations for Vanessa’s graduation party.”

Lisa stood beside him in a cream blazer that still looked pressed at 12:18 a.m., one hand curled around his arm like she was keeping him from drifting too close to the truth.

“She’s always been clumsy,” Lisa said softly.

She said softly as if kindness made a lie cleaner.

“It was dark down there. She probably missed a step.”

Vanessa stood on Lisa’s other side.
