The ballroom at Fort Kingston, Virginia, was built to make people feel small.

Medals caught the gold light every time someone moved.

Spouses smiled carefully.

Officers laughed at the right volume.

And at Table Nine, my chair was gone.

I stood beside the table in a black evening gown, my clutch pressed against my palm, looking at the empty space where my place setting should have been.

There was a folded napkin there.

There was a water glass.
