The laughter was what made strangers look up first.

Jake Carter had always known how to make a room turn toward him, and Denver International Airport gave him the biggest room he had ever been offered.

He stood near the gate area with his shoulders squared, his chin lifted, and his voice pitched just high enough to carry over boarding calls and coffee orders.

I stood a few feet away with my worn leather tote against my leg and my navy coat buttoned wrong because my hands had been too tight when I put it on that morning.
