They called me “sweetheart” at the Air Force gate before they looked at my ID.

Jet fuel hung faintly in the air.

The pavement gave off that rubbery smell asphalt gets after a long day of sun, and my Starbucks cup had been sweating in the console since the last exit off the highway.

I had been driving for six hours with moving boxes stacked in the back seat, my garment bag folded over two plastic bins, and my dress uniform hanging behind me in a dry-cleaning sleeve.

I was not in uniform because I was still officially on leave until 0800 the next morning.

That was not unusual.

That was not suspicious.

That was exactly how my orders were written.

I had read them twice at 6:15 that morning in the hotel parking lot while my coffee was still too hot to drink.

The name looked almost too clean on paper for how hard the road had been getting there.

But take away the uniform, put a woman in a blue blouse with hair loose on her shoulders, and some of them will show you what they really think authority looks like.
