Admiral Daniel Cross had chosen the loudest moment possible to humiliate Rachel Bennett.

The desert sun flashed on the spill as it spread over the table.

It soaked the spring.

It touched Rachel’s fingers and ran down the front of her gray work shirt.

Someone behind Cross laughed.

Rachel did not move.

His voice carried over the firing lanes.

Rifles went quiet one by one.

The wind pushed pale dust over the mats.

Rachel picked up the next component.

The metal was wet, but not ruined.

That was the second thing Cross had not understood.

The first was Rachel.

“Tell me something, sweetheart,” he said. “What exactly is your rank?”

A lieutenant laughed.
